Bob
Swart gives his opinion of Borland's new ECO III...
BDS 2006 includes Enterprise Core
Objects III. Apart
from being a new version with new features, the most
important change compared to Delphi 2005 is that ECO
III core features are now available in every edition
of BDS 2006 (as long as it's .NET). That means that you
can use ECO III in the Professional edition of Delphi
2006 for .NET or C#Builder 2006 - it's no longer limited
to Architect users only.

ECO (Enterprise
Core Objects) is an object oriented
application framework which can use modelling features
for creating
database or 'data based' applications. An overview
can be found here on
Borland's site. For a hands-on guide, see Bob Swart's
series for Bitwise on creating
a Blog application using
ECO II. |
With the Professional edition
of BDS 2006, you can use ECO III features to design your
UML (Unified Modelling Language) model, work with EcoSpaces
and make them persistent in XML files, and bind them
to visual controls. The Enterprise edition of BDS 2006
adds persistency to databases instead of XML files, which
means multi-user (and ASP.NET) support.
With the Architect edition, we get additional database
wrapping (reverse engineering) and support for State
Machine models. With the latter, I've already mentioned
one of the many new features, which also include ASP.NET
AutoForms and many more, which will be covered in my
next Delphi programming article for Bitwise, covering
ECO III.
In my personal view, ECO II was good, ECO III
is even better, and it's now available for everyone,
so do yourself a favor and make sure to check it out!
