2005 :: So What Did You Miss?

Bitwise went online on the 1st of June 2005. Just in case you missed anything, here are a few selected highlights that you may want to have a look at...

NOTE: For full listings of Bitwise features, see The Archive (by subject) or The Issue Index (by publication date).

Programming :: For Visual Basic programmers, we had a hands-on series about VB - Serial Communications with VB6 and another on VB .NET Communications. We also considered the problems faced by VB developers trying to move to .NET in a special feature, The Strange Death of Visual Basic; and, giving the Microsoft view on the matter, we had an Interview with VB Product Manager, Jay Roxe.

Is the fate of VB all in the cards?
For more on the 'VB problem' also see Dermot's December Bytegeist

For Delphi coders, we had a video interview with Borland's David Intersimone in June, and David was back to do an audio Interview in November. There were also lots of hands-on Delphi projects such as Bob Swart's Delphi Blog, Huw Collingbourne's Delphi - Screen capture project and a series on coding a Delphi Application Launchpad. Delphi isn't the only modern implementation of Pascal. RemObjects Chrome is an Object Pascal for Visual Studio .NET - find out more about this in our interview with Chrome chief architect, marc hoffman. For newcomers to C#, or anyone who wants to explore features such as .NET serialization, we had C# Adventures in Coding.

Smalltalk - Object Orientation as it should be...?

There were plenty of features on other languages too such as Prolog (see First Steps in Prolog and our guide to Free Prologs) and Smalltalk, with our Smalltalk - Beginner's Guide, Learn To Program Dolphin Smalltalk a lesson creating a 3D Browser in Squeak and even a free download of the personal edition of Dolphin Smalltalk.

Which is the best software for serious mathematicians?

Maths and Astronomy :: We reviewed Planetarium software SkyMap Pro 11 and The Sky 6 and a free alternative, Cartes du Ciel. We did a head-to-head review of top end maths packages, Maple 10 v Mathematica 5.2 as well as Wolfram's less expensive CalcCenter 3. And if you want to explore the highways and byways of mathematics, be sure to take a look at Wilf Hey's regular column Mathematical Digressions.

Put together Windows, Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP and you may end up with CMS!

Web Development: We looked at RSS and Atom and the tools you need to Read Feeds and Create Feeds. We gave an introduction to CMS and WAMP, and provided help on how to Choose and Install a Blog.

Whoever would have thought maths could be so pretty! This is a picture created by XenoDream.

More: If graphics and fractals are you thing you may want to read our review of three leading 3D Landscape Design programs - Vue, Bryce and MojoWorld and ran interviews with MojoWorld's Dr. Kenton 'Doc Mojo' Musgrave and Garth Thornton, creator of 3D fractal program, XenoDream. We've also covered all kinds of other subjects ranging from Learning a Language online to How To Fit a second PC hard drive and How to Copy and Compress videos onto DVDs. We've had reviews of screen recording software such as BB Flashback and Camtasia Studio and for (sometimes) light relief there are our regular columns Rants and Raves and Bytegeist...

...and that's just a taster! For a complete listing (by subject) of features, interviews, tutorials and reviews, refer to The Archive; for a chronological listing, see The Issue Index.
